p. 212 :
« I suddenly realized that the universe is nothing but light, light, light! I realized more – that actually there is no light and dark at all! In this great void – space – in which everything swims there is a nameless energy which is by turns light, motion, heat, etc., anything and everything we are capable of making or naming or using, once we comprehend. Whatever world we have represents the maximum of our penetration of this unceasing void – which again is not emptiness, but its very opposite. As though – and truly it is thus – the only reality is the one we create through understanding. Through desire, I might say. Desire is the primal thing – the breath that moves the waters of the deep. The whole architecture of the universe is governed by desire which achieves its aim in realizing its
containedness. »
p. 214 :
« The most remarkable aspect of the Yoga philosophy of action is the attitude toward the will, the idea of so concentrating upon a desire as to put space around it, isolate it, insulate it. I interpret this in terms of ‘desire’ – of pure desire, as opposed to the muddied plural desires. All this is fascinating for the writer. No one understands better than he the subtle connection between will and desire, or the flexibility of freedom within the rigid frame of necessity. Who knows better than the writer how futile is will alone or desire alone even, if the life one lives is a contradiction to the thing wished. One sees so clearly how each tree brings forth its own fruit. One knows that things must be done according to law. Nothing happens accidentally or whimsically. Whatever perfection one achieves is always the result of training. Few are the writers who have mastered their craft like the Yogi masters life. When it happens we get something
imperishable. »
