Bonjour Guy, […] ‘Polony’, now that has made me think. I suppose it must be slang. My Oxford dictionary says it is another way of saying ‘BOLOGNA’, a large sausage, originally named after the Italian city. But a boy like that probably makes up his own words; I can imagine he may mean boloney/baloney: ‘nonsense’, also described in the Oxford as a corruption of Bologna. He may be using it as ‘bollocks’ but perhaps I am making him more crude than he really is! With your grasp of languages it would be interesting to know which languages you are translating from and to. Although I enjoy French to English, I would never ever be able to translate into French – you need a lifetime of a language to be really good at it, n’est-ce pas ? I have been reading English since I was five, so my grasp of English should be pretty good by now!! […] A bientot,
Elizabeth
