12 juillet : « So home and there find my wife in a dogged humour for my not dining at home, and I did give her a pull by the nose and some ill words, which she provoked me to by something she spoke, that we fell extraordinarily out ; insomuch, that I going to the office to avoid further anger, she fallowed me in a devishly manner thither, and with much ado I got her into the garden out of hearing, to prevent shame ; and so home, and by degrees I fount it necessary to calme her, and did ; and then to the office, where pretty late, and then to walk with her in the garden, and so to supper and pretty good friends ; and so to bed – with my mind very quiet. »

« À la maison où je trouve ma femme d’une humeur de chien parce que je n’ai pas dîné à la maison ; je l’ai alors tirée par le nez et lui ai adressé quelques mauvaises paroles, auxquelles elle m’a obligé à cause de quelque chose qu’elle a dit, ce qui nous a extraordinairement fâchés ; tant et plus que je suis parti au bureau pour éviter une crise supplémentaire, elle me suivant jusque là comme une diablesse, et alors avec beaucoup de fracas je l’ai sortie dans le jardin pour qu’on ne l’entende pas, pour éviter la honte ; et retour à la maison, où par degrés j’ai jugé nécessaire de la calmer, ce que j’ai fait ; et ensuite au bureau, où suis resté assez tard, et ensuite ai marché avec elle dans le jardin, et puis souper avec de bons amis ; et puis au lit – avec l’esprit très tranquille. »
